Was at Walmart this a.m. & after checking out & on my way out the door an employee spoke to me. I was carrying a bag of goods & a bag of potatoes.
Employee: "Sir, I need to check your receipt."
Me: "No thanks, I'm not a thief."
Employee: "We're required to ask for a receipt when an item isn't bagged."
Me: "I'm not a thief."
Employee: "I didn't say you were."
Me: "I think you did."
All that happened as I was walking away. Pissed me off & I think it's a stupid policy. Why would I bag a bag of potatoes? And if a person were stealing something & they bagged the item I guess they wouldn't be checked?
Besides that, there are electronic scanners at the doors that can detect items not scanned. So the personal check is pointless.

I must say I'm surprised at your hostility to the employee. They addressed you as "sir", which is polite and were only doing the job they were charged with. I'm sure that the employee wouldn't care if you were carrying out a TV if the store hadn't given them the responsibility.
Your beef should be with the store itself and if it annoyed you enough be taken up with the store manager.
It's sad that people today evidently act in a manner that causes the stores to have to have these policies but "it is what it is".

Dave, there was no hostility in my tone of voice or actions. I was simply making statements as to why I wasn't going to show my receipt.
Though I was feeling angry that was after I'd left the store & thought about what just happened.
As for addressing a manager: I thought of that but let it go. Walmart isn't going to change their policy on my behalf.
