In Georgia it is against the law to kill non-poison snakes.

David, copperheads used to be common around the neighborhood where I grew up. I can recall several times my Mum out hanging clothes, seeing one in the yard & killing it by spearing & crushing its head with a metal clothes prop tip.

Henry, funny. No, I'm not British despite my use of "Mum". It's what all 5 of us kids have always used.
Maybe it's 'cause we're only 3rd generation Irish. My granddad came here from Ireland. And maybe since Ireland & England are neighbors we picked up the term?
Anyway, in my mind (what little remains) "Mom" sounds too formal to me. Like "Mother". Who calls their female parent that?
