Gassing up may be a routine exercise, but if you aren’t strategic you could be siphoning money down the drain. Are you making some money mistakes that are costing you?
In this article, we’ll outline several things that could prevent you from getting the most bang for your buck at the gas station.

I've reached a point where the only thing that matters at the gas station is that it's not a "self-serve". And it's getting tougher to find stations where they pump it for you. If one lives long enough the bodily failings come with it. Not fun but better than not being here at all.

Dave, wow, it's been decades since I've seen a gas station that isn't self-serve. I do recall though when self-serve changed from pumping ones gas & then paying for it to like it is now: pay first then the pump's turned on. First time I ran into that & the pump wouldn't work I went into the station to find out why. When I was told I'd have to pay first I said, "What? No, I'm not going to guess how much I need." And I left to go to another station. Now they're all like that. BTW, gas here in PA has gradually increased by 50¢ a gallon over the past month. Going from $3.20 to $3.70. And further increases wouldn't surprise me.

You really can't blame the stations in this day and age. People will just fill up and take off. I suppose that a camera will pick up the plate number but also in today's world, the car may be stolen and they haven't got time to chase it down on the computer or otherwise.
Before becoming so aged, an extra run into the store never bothered me. Not the station's fault. It's the people that make up today's society. Very sad.

Dave, yeah, I'd heard that's why it was switched to pay first. Reminds of a time when I just drove off. No, I wasn't stealing gas. I hadn't got any. One time when I was still working I had the company truck & was going to get supplies. But first I needed gas. Stopped in for that, paid for it. And I was so focused on my other errands I went back out & drove away...without pumping any gas. Luckily I realized that in time to turn around & get back to the pump before someone else got there.

Fortunately, the station where I get my yearly vehicle inspection sticker is a combination garage, towing service, and gas station where they pump the gas. A couple of older guys take care of the pumps and stickers while the younger guys do most of the repairs and wrecker service.
Do you live anywhere near Franklin, PA?

Dave, you sure surprised me with that question. Like, how's he know about Franklin?
Anyway, I'm about 8 miles from there. And back in the late 70s I lived much nearer in Woodvale. Which is just across the bridge from Franklin. Walk-able distance.

Back in the late 80's we were racing a sprint car with URC, a group based in New Jersey. We had a Friday night show at Merritville, which was rained out. A second show was scheduled for Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio on Sunday.
As the Friday show was cancelled, Bruce, the owner/driver thought maybe we could pick up a few bucks at Tri-City Speedway on Saturday night in Franklin. We were welcomed to join their show and were entered in the first qualifying heat. Poor Bruce tangled with one of the local racers, flipped and made a mess of the car. The track wrecker carried it back to the pits and we managed to get it back in the enclosed trailer and headed off to find a local motel.
Next day, bright and early, we headed for the Sharon Speedway. Got there nice and early and started stripping damaged parts off of the car and replacing what was needed to make it race worthy for the afternoon show. Another URC crew arrived early and pitched in to help us get the car back together. We did make the show (with the help and a few borrowed parts) and finished 9th out of 20 or 21 cars.
Headed back for Massachusetts after the show and the three of us {Bruce, myself, and my son Scott) were dead tired when we arrived. I think I took a sick day at work on Monday.
Long story but it was my one and only trip to that section of PA. We had many races in the Eastern portion of the state and also New Jersey but they all started and finished back up here in Mass.

Dave, sounds like a fun & exciting time you had. Reading your post I'd thought, that Franklin can't be the one I mentioned. So I did a search & found out there are least 3 Franklins in PA. One is the one you visited, another is a county in the west that borders Maryland & then the small borough I was talking about in SW PA. PA is a large state so there's lotsa places I don't know about. Franklin borough is famous for being the home of one of the soldiers who raised the flag at Iwo Jima. There's a memorial there for him, Sgt. Michael Strank. Which reminds of other famous folks from this area; Johnny Weissmuller, the original Tarzan in the 40s movies, Charles Bronson & Jimmy Stewart. There's a museum for Stewart not far from here that Carrie & I've visited. All kinds of memorabilia there. Including numerous movie posters, outfits he used in his films & an assortment of guns he used in his westerns.
