Pete, do you have a dog or cat? I don't. The woman who lives below me has a dog that barks endlessly - and often. She says he is a guard dog and that is what he is trained to do....

That is Not what / how a guard dog is trained!
Had a cat once that was better security than the dog.

Sandy, no dog here...yet. Have been looking for just the right one for months now. On Craigslist & nearby shelters.
Though Carrie & I would both like one I have to consider the initial cost. Shelter: $150. Private party: average $600. Then there's future costs; vet bills, food etc.
Though I could afford those I have to ask myself, do I really want to? In addition, all the responsibility (feeding, walking etc) would be on me since Carrie is disabled.

Henry, you're right about guard dog training. Your cat mentioned reminded me of this story: Long ago there was a child playing in our neighbor's fenced in yard. Often the gate was left open. So a dog from somewhere else would come in to bark at our cat. Which would right away run up a tree. Until the day the dog came in barking & running toward the child. Our cat jumped out of the tree, ran toward the dog & leaped onto its back. Bit into the back of its neck & clawed the hell out it with its front legs. With the dog howling. After that day that dog never came in the yard again.

Not to small, small organs.
Shedding, hair cuts. Shelter dogs have been gone through better than a used car!
Often shelters animals that someone has paid something against their fee, as in if the animal has been there a long time. And an older has much knowledge.
