In simple terms, trolling is when someone comments or responds to something you post, usually in a confrontational way that is designed to garner a strong, emotional reaction.
They hide behind their computer screens, and actively go out of their way to cause trouble on the internet.
If a troll tries to provoke you, just ignore them. They’re not worth your time or emotional distress.

Pete, is a troll someone who only surfaces in discussion groups?
btw: I doubt that a troll could cause me "strong emotional distress." I'd just out him by saying something like "Don't feed the troll" which I've done in the past. Haven't you?

Sandy, yeah, trolls can show up anywhere where messages are exchanged.
As for ignoring trolls: I certainly ignore those nowadays but haven't always. Way back before I ever had a newsgroup I got my start with those in Usenet forums in the late 90s.
Where I personally would reply to trolls, engaging in trading insults. There was also a WebTV newsgroup where that went on too. It was all meant to be fun seeing who could outwit one other with the most insulting comebacks, a game of one-upmanship.

Ah -WebTV where we first learned some of the wonders of the internet without needing a computer to do so. Above all, it was where I became addicted to discussion/news groups like this one.
Pete, do you remember how many years ago WebTV surfaced? I don't even recall how I happened to buy the 6.5 wonder of the world. I'm also wondering how many posters in this group began their internet experience on WebTV.
Ah, those were the good ole daze.

That's where I got my start. One of our grand-daughters switched to a computer and offered us her WebTV unit. Can't recall the year but we used to take it to Florida and Maine for our winter , spring and fall visits.

Sandy, I'm pretty sure WebTV first came out in '96. I didn't discover it though until '97 when I found it at an electronics store.
What prompted me to get one was my frequently seeing in commercials "Visit our website." And asked myself, what's a website?, & had to find out.
Personally I ignored the Newsgroups for 2 years. Never clicked-on one 'cause I'd thought they were just that, ways to read actual current news stories online. Which didn't interest me.
Then one day I did click-on one & was surprised to see other WebTV-ers "talking" & thought, wow, I gotta get me one of those. Which I did in '99, the very first version of Xtreme. And the rest, as they say, is history...

Pete, I posted in WebTV news groups, but don't think I ever wondered into yours. My loss!
Dave, I don't believe we ever crossed paths on WebTV. When/where did we meet - if you recall?

Sandy, actually I had two Webtv groups. The original of this one for helping others with using WebTV & another for socializing only. Called (guess) Xpressions.
Which is why Xpressions is part of this forum.
BTW, I had alot of help founding my 1st WebTV group from two popular & knowledgeable group owners who guided me thru making one; Robin Of Lox & Curly Roe.
