For the past 3 years my neighbors have planted a small tree in their backyard of various kinds. All 3 eventually died.
The common mistakes they'd made were: transplanting in mid-summer heat & not watering them.
Now recall that I did grounds-keeping work on a large scale for 12 years. And I sometimes transplanted trees. 'Cause of my experience I'd advised them that when planting a young tree you should water it daily for two weeks so it'll take hold.
Looked out my window today & saw a tree in a planter in their yard. So they've learned to plant in spring. Anyway, I went out & dug a hole for it, packed extra soil around it & then watered it. And once again said to them about the watering.
It's a Flowering Crab Apple tree so it'll look real nice when it blooms if they follow my advice. Guess we'll see...

Yes, it would be sensible if he followed your advice this time around, but don't count on it. Some people don't welcome good advice and persist in doing things their own(wrong) way.
PS - It is a great looking tree - potentially! btw: There's a big space below this post and I don't know how to shorten it, but I'll try.

Sandy, dunno why they neglected my advice in the past but maybe they learned their lesson. I mean small trees go for about $100 on average. As for your extra space: I checked for that by using Edit & found none. It's normal. Normal spacing in a post, from top to bottom, equals the same amount as an avatar takes up. Shown below. If one only types a short message there's a bunch of space left over. Real long posts expand to hold the additional text, as you can see in my post above.

Boy trees have gone up. Maybe there was a special when they bought before?
How was the spot they chose?

Henry, depends where you buy a tree. Cheaper at say Lowes but more costly at a nursery.
The spot is out in the open where it'll get plenty of sun. Middle of their backyard.
