At times when I visit the homepage of this group the icon (see below) for new posts or none shows that there are none. Yet, when I open a forum, such as General, it indeed shows new posts. How can this be?

Once you open a topic it will not let other threads show. You can put your mouse on the Xtreme-5 under the Home button and a drop down will come down and you should see unread topics.

Pete I noticed that the other day too.
I found that if I visited a forum with new threads and I open only one new thread, then on the homepage it would show no new threads in that forum even though there still were some not open.

I also see that over to the upper right you'll see the word New next to participate if there's a new post in a thread that you've posted to.

David & Nancy: well, I tried both methods you've suggested & both only show a partial listing of new posts.
With David's tip it's showing new posts in Xpressions but none in General, even though there are 5 topics marked New. With Nancy's tip it's just the opposite: new in General, none in Xpressions.
Guess I'll just open a forum to see New. Otherwise it gets confusing.

Just discovered this, a quick way to find new posts. On the group's homepage simply mouse-over the folder icon to the left of each category & it'll indicate whether or not there's new posts.

Another forum oddity: Whenever I post something, I see this message beneath the posting space, "The thread in which you are posting has no effects applied to it." Question: What are those effects they speak of and why don't I have any?

Sandy, there are no effects 'cause I've not chosen to apply any to this thread. It simply means I've not tagged it as: Announcement, Sticky, Locked etc.

Oh, then they don't need to tell us that. It gives the impression that one has failed to sign up for some essential features.
Just checked the smilies. They are kinda boring. Plus, they lack any clarification, i.e. sad, happy, pissed off, etc. They are so small, my eyes can't always differentiate.
I also miss being able to click onto one link that shows all the most recent posts, not per forum.

Sandy, I'm pretty sure I saw a button that displays all the new posts, covering all forums. I just can't recall where it was. I'm betting Nancy will know.

I also miss being able to click onto one link that shows all the most recent posts, not per forum. Sandy this isn't quite the same but you can mouse over each forum folder and it'll tell you if there are new posts and if you look toward the top right side you'll see the word participated. To the left of participated will be a NEW button if somebody has posted to a thread that you've posted to. Click onto it and it'll list all of the threads that you've posted to that has a new post and yup that's not the same as knowing all of the recent posts---maybe dig around here some more and you might find a link that does that.

Well I guess I should of taken the time to look around because you can view both Recent Threads and Recent Posts by going to the bottom of the home page where you'll see those links under Threads & Posts.

Nancy, I'd never paid attention to Recent Posts at the bottom. Thanks for pointing it out.
Don't worry about not looking around sooner. Heck, I'm still looking around myself & frequently find something that makes me think: hmm, I wonder what that does? Then click-on it. Alot to learn in here.
