Doing a transaction at an out-of-network ATM is costing Americans an average of $4.77, which is an all-time high.
With a little forethought, you can find ways to sidestep those ATM fees and keep more of your money. Here are some ways to avoid ATM fees.

You can also avoid the fees by joining the military, put in your a few years, and then show your DD214 {or at least mine) at your bank or credit union. They give you a special account which takes care of all ATM withdrawal fees. Worked well for us over the years when we used to winter in Florida and spend a few of the warmer months in Maine. These banks still withdraw the fee when you make a withdrawal and it shows up in your account. Right next to it is a "deposit" for the same amount.
It really is a useful tool when you travel and are required to use unfamiliar banks. I'm not sure that it's worth the 4 years of my life?? Haha
