Normally we would've gotten our first frost here in PA about 2 weeks ago, but it was unseasonably warm in September. Now here it is, a frosty October 1st.
I predicted it was going to frost when I saw, yesterday, the expected overnight temp. Was supposed to drop into the 30s. So yesterday evening I got a tarp & covered my tomato plants. After giving those 4 months of TLC & still getting ripe ones daily, with plenty of green ones yet, I surely didn't want my plants killed by frost.
About 10 mins after I'd covered my 'maters I saw a frost warning on the Weather Channel. And thought: aha, I was right. Anyway, a few minutes ago I looked outside for signs of frost on the grass but didn't see any. So I then walked out to my SUV to check the windshield & yep, thick coating of frost on the glass.
Currently it's 34 with a sunny 68 predicted for today. So I'll let the tarp on my plants till the sun warms them up under there. Average of 72 forecast for this week's daytime temp & 50 overnight. So, Indian Summer begins, giving me a few more weeks of growing season before winter begins creeping in.

We don't like that word around here. We may get one in December or January.

David, got concerned this a.m. Last evening the Weather Channel predicted an overnight temp of 43 so I didn't cover my tomato plants. However this morning when I looked at the current weather the temp was 36. And I uttered a 4-letter word thinking I'd see frost on my plants.
But, when I went out to look at them there was only dew on the plants, no frost.
The temp is supposed to go from 36 now to 76 in the afternoon. A 40 degree difference that's quite unusual that'll happen in such a short time.

43! That's the temp we saw this morning at about 5:30 up in Maine. Packed up and headed home after spending the month at the cottage. Nice to be home but if one enjoys solitude, that cottage is the place to be.
