I've been test-driving it since last evening. I'm a strong advocate of online privacy, especially my own, so I already use measures to ensure that. I have Firefox delete all cookies upon closing, use Clear Flash Cookies to delete all flash cookies & use Privacy Badger to block all tracking cookies.
The Firefox extension HMIP goes a step further & reroutes ones Internet traffic thru a long list of available proxy-servers all over the world. You choose which one you want.
It does indeed hide ones IP number by replacing it with one from the proxy. I know that for sure 'cause I visited an IP Lookup tool first before downloading HMIP & then again afterwards. That's a plus.
What could be a minus is that because ones traffic is being rerouted it slows down page-loading, as I've seen. However, you can turn HMIP off & on at will.
Not done playing with it yet but I'm thinking I'd leave it off when I visit sites I consider benign, like this group of ours, & on when I visit any commercial website. For example, when I visit Walmart to search for an item. Knowing that such sites harvest my IP & use that to compile personal info about me.
OK, enough of my chatter. Here's an outline of what HMIP does:
Conceal your online identity with the click of a button. Surf anonymously, encrypt your Internet traffic, hide your IP while surfing the Internet, using forums, sending E-mails, instant messaging, playing games, and more. Compatible with all web browsers and Internet applications.
Hiding your IP address is as simple as clicking the "Hide My IP" button, which automatically configures your web browser or other application to use a proxy server from our private proxy network. Change your IP address automatically every few minutes and cloak your browser's User Agent and Referrer headers.
