Nancy, all sounds useful, interesting & tempting to participate in. I may convince myself to partake of Facebook someday...

Pete you can join facebook with a fake name, but because it's been so long since I joined, I no longer remember what other info is needed, though I'm very sure you do need to give them 2 email addies. First one is primary email and 2nd addy is just in case you get locked out of facebook, they can send a new password to you. Both addies could be old webtv addies you no longer use or you could make up a couple new email accounts.
The one thing I do remember when I signed up was that I was asked to give them my gmail password so that they could add all of my contacts as friends. I said no thanks to that, some family members didn't realize that you could say no to that and end out giving their password--not a good idea !!
The reason for giving an email addy is if somebody mentions your facebook persona in their post, then facebook will notify you that you have been mentioned in a post. You can turn off all notification settings, you can also set it up so only people you friend on facebook can see anything you post.
Other then the family posts I just really like it for all of the updated news that I can read in one place.

Nancy, well, I could go by my nickname, Pete. Which those who know me personally use instead of my given name. Some don't even know my real name. And no one online knows it except those businesses & family I e-mail.

I went in and thinned out some of the Metro tv stations from my feed, may have 2 still. and dumped all but 1 from Fargo. I find on the swap groups names like Tracy Jean Paige Marie or something like PeteNCarrie and getting by with it.

Like Nancy I use FB for a lot of good groups out there. I am in some COPD groups and I have learned a lot.

You can follow local news stations and police forces on Twitter also.
Nancy, I never thought of using social media to find people to shovel snow. Great tip!

Don't you have to use your real name on Facebook? You don't have to on Twitter.

Look for something like search for groups, they may even show up on the right. yes you do they say. the two I posted were in front of me as I typed them. my name is on no other site, and I have not been asked to send an image of my id, Yet.

Pete I just came back from checking my facebook and here's another example of why I like facebook. I've friended all of the local news stations and police forces so I get breaking news, but the local news stations quite often post stories asking us what we think of them. This week they posted Cathy's, car's don't need to warm up article. There were 102 replies to that post just now and all except 2 replied that of coarse you need to let your car warm up before driving unless you want a huge mechanical bill. Two people did reply that they start their car and take off at a fast rate in order to get their rpms up to 3000 to warm up their cars--I'm pretty sure they were being sarcastic !! Now I'm off to view a video posted by the local police of a house on fire near my place. Nancy, you've made some powerful arguments for using Facebook, both above and in other posts. Thanks for enlightening me about their many and varied uses. You've also taught me a valuable lesson about judging that which I know little or nothing about.
