Sandy, you're correct when you say:
"I 'm pretty sure that quote brackets look like this [] and not this ()."
But, I purposely used ( ) in order to make the quote tags inoperable. If I hadn't the tags wouldn't be visible in a post. Instead you'd see only this:
Inventing your own tags simply isn't going to work. IE: quote="Pete" & Quote
You must use the correct tags: (quote) & (/quote) with the proper brackets.

Henry, I go to profile then edit profile and then go to setting I put the font size in the default BBCode and then save it. It will show up every time in my reply box.

Or forget all you've learned & use my simple, quick way of quoting. No tags to add, no buttons to click-on.
Copy what you want to quote, note who said it & use Italics to differentiate it from your own text. Thus:

Pete, I already mentioned that method earlier in this thread. However, when I try to paste copied text after first hitting the italics icon above, the text does not present in italics and I simply get this:

See? No italics.
Clearly, features that are working for most of you in this forum do not work for me and I have grown weary of trying to explain in what ways they are not working. Whether it's my browser or some magic buttons that are not turned on or off, I'm just spinning my wheels. With basic features like quote, pasting copied words in italics and who knows what else not working, my ability to post here is seriously diminished.

Sandy, well then do it like I do. I don't click-on a button for Italics. I simply type in the tags myself.
Like this (i)Text here(/i).
Of course these ( ) should be these [ ]

Sandy, this group works as expected on my Chromebook. You might want to check it out on your Chromebook sometime to see the difference.
I assume you could use the Chrome browser on your iMac, too, if you wanted to. Don't know if it's worth it to you to change (or add) browsers or not.
You can go into your Settings on your Chromebook and set it to Sync with the Chrome browser on your iMac, so all your bookmarks and stuff from the Chromebook (if you have any) would appear in the Chrome browser on your iMac.

Pete, why can't I just quote somebody the way that Henry just did, or any other way that works for me? (The quote function doesn't seem to be working for Henry either.) I just don't understand why you keep choosing some particular way you want me to use quote and having to defend myself when/if that doesn't work.
Cathy, I will try the Chromebook, although I haven't used it in over a year and it probably needs umpteen upgrades.

Cathy, I downloaded the Chrome browser on my Mac computer over 2 years ago, but never use it. I'm there now; it needs upgrading, but I was able to access this group, and guess what? Quote works here exactly the way it should!! So, I guess the issue is with Apple's Safari browser and not with my settings. Oh, and things look different here. There are car ads on the top and bottom of the page, not intrusive at all. I like them far better than that written message. The Preview button doesn't function here either, nor does the italics function work when I try to paste copied material, but I can always do that manually, as Pete noted.

Sandy, I suggested alternate ways to you 'cause you were having trouble with Quote. Though my suggestions were also directed at anyone having trouble.
Your feeling that you had to defend yourself because I was investing my time & effort to help you is beyond my understanding. Defend yourself against what?
And in Henry's post above yours he was simply showing an example of how to quote the old-fashioned way by using quote marks.

Pete, on the first page of this thread, I had already suggested the quote method Henry used. I called it Option 3. So, I took his post (above) as meaning he cannot use the quote button the way it is intended either, not that he was suggesting something I had already covered yesterday. I was and still am okay with doing that, but I assumed when you kept suggesting other methods that you didn't like it. This whole quote thing has really stressed me out beginning with your PM that I read as a reprimand about how I was still writing my responses within the quote box and that you were advising me privately "so as not to single me out publicly." I believe this has all been a big misunderstanding. Likely unwittingly, you upset me and my reaction has made you angry, or indignant. Whatever the case, I don't think it is worth sacrificing the recently renewed good will between us. Peace
